Mark Melluish explores the topic of why 'I must forgive them' (Matthew 18:21-25). A few years ago there was an assassination attempt on the life of the leader of the Catholic church. He was shot but he recovered. The amazing thing about the story was as soon as the Pope recovered he went to the prison where they were holding the assassin to offer forgiveness to the man. It caught the world's attention. Time magazine had it on it's cover: "Why Forgive? The Pope Pardons the Gunman". That's good question. Why should I forgive? It's a question that's been asked for 2000 years. Peter asked it in verse 21. "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, `Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother when he sins against me. Up to seven times?'" Peter is talking about repeated forgiveness here. Have you noticed it's easier to forgive a one-time offense than it is continuous irritation? Every one of us have an irritating source in our lives -- an irregular person, a heavenly sandpaper.
