Overview


We are looking for a passionate, Spirit-filled, follower of Jesus to join our staff team in building God’s kingdom in Northwood and beyond. Emmanuel Northwood is a large, vibrant evangelical and charismatic church on the edge of NW London. We have strong links with New Wine and are a church that seeks to be fully rooted in both Word and Spirit. Emmanuel is going through a season of growth, and we have just launched a new vision of ‘Encountering, Restoring, Discipling, Sending’. This is an exciting time for Emmanuel, and we are looking to recruit an Associate Vicar who will play a key role in delivering this new vision especially in the areas of Discipling and Restoring. We are seeking a gifted Pastor Teacher who will be passionate about preaching and teaching, with a heart to help others grow in their faith supported by pastoral care. They will also be a key leader in our church, helping us to discern God’s direction and enabling us to follow where Jesus is leading.

Background and knowledge

1. An ordained priest within the Church of England, who is committed to the authority of Scripture, is prayerful and open to the renewing work of the Holy Spirit and who holds to historically orthodox church beliefs and teaching in matters of faith and conduct.
2. A man or woman who will be prayerful, collaborative, encouraging and flexible in their approach to ministry.
3. Confident in public ministry, with a strong record of preaching and leading, led by the Spirit, in a range of ministry contexts.
4. Either someone who has completed (or will soon complete) a curacy and is looking for significantly more responsibility; or someone who may currently be leading a church, or churches, and who is now looking for a role within a team where they can focus on their teaching, discipling and pastoral gifts.

Principal duties and responsibilities


1. Working collaboratively with the senior leaders:
a. To provide both strategic leadership for the church and ministry to the wider community.
b. In playing a full role in leadership at all levels in the life of the church including PCC, Standing Committee Senior Staff, and oversight of other committees as appropriate.
c. To take on additional leadership responsibilities over time, sharing and growing in incumbent-level ministry experience.
2. Teaching and equipping others through: a. Leading, preaching and presiding in public worship. b. Training and equipping others in whole church or ministry settings according to gifting and experience.
3. Responsibility for delivery of key strategic goal of ‘Discipling’ a. Develop a discipleship strategy that embraces the whole of life discipleship and mission as a key part of our vision. b. Provide oversight and leadership of our small group ministry and developing and pioneering new forms of discipleship.
4. Responsibility for delivery of key strategic goal of ‘Restoring’.
a. Develop a strategy that enables every member of the church family to find restoration, wholeness and healing e.g. through courses, ministry days, prayer models etc.
b. Work with others to ensure all members of our church family receive appropriate pastoral care
c. Lead and develop the existing team and structures to deliver pastoral care
5. Bring oversight and management to volunteers within areas of ministry including the line management of paid staff and involvement in their ongoing professional development.
6. Play an appropriate part in the wider life of the church, including in the life of the deanery and wider diocese. This is a full-time, Incumbent-level position for an initial fixed term of 5 years under Common Tenure and is intended to offer scope for considerable personal development. This role will require a person of considerable enthusiasm, energy and wisdom, who is capable of providing inspirational leadership. As such we are looking for someone with the following qualities:

• A passionate disciple of Jesus Christ, who knows God as Father, is rooted in a deep commitment to the Bible and is committed to the renewing work of the Holy Spirit.
• A man or woman with a testimony to the power of prayer.
• Passionate about the Church and committed to enabling the ministry of others.
• The faith to take risks and move forward in trust.
• Brave in decision making and kind in the delivery.

Theological persuasion


• Evangelical, committed to the Bible as our authority.
• Charismatic, experienced in the ministry and work of the Holy Spirit.
• Conservative in ethics.
• Willingness to work within the Church of England and with a range of worship styles.

Character demonstrates:


• Energy, enthusiasm, initiative and a robust faith.
• Resilience and the ability to cope with large church ministry.
• Personal integrity and humility.
• The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Gifts and Skills


• Inspirational preacher and leader, grounded in the Bible and confident in leading public worship and prayer ministry times.
• Proven track record in personal discipleship and discipling others
• Proven track record in pastoral care
• An effective leader and manager of people and other resources who can implement, manage and monitor plans to achieve the vision, building teams and releasing the gifts and skills of others.
• Strong relational skills. Approachable and compassionate.
• Able to organise, recruit, delegate and co-ordinate.
