Description of Job
The important new post of UK Director comes at a particularly exciting point in the growth of this international Christian charity.

With the growth of the work of Christ’s Hope International (CHI) overseas, the UK Trustees wish to expand activity within the UK and increase the funds available to support vulnerable and disadvantaged children living in poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. This means appointing, for the first time, salaried staff to the UK organisation, including this post.

The UK Director will lead and manage the development and operation of Christ’s Hope International in the United Kingdom within the overall vision, mission and core values of Christ’s Hope International. This will principally involve the coordination of our relationships and activities with local churches, businesses and other partners, especially in fund development.

This is a full or part-time, permanent post based within the UK. The post will initially be for between 3-5 days per week. The salary will be negotiable around £25,000 - £30,000 per annum, pro-rata if part-time. The post is home-based and will involve travel within the UK, and occasionally abroad, for which expenses will be paid.

The Work of CHI in Africa

Within sub-Saharan Africa, CHI works mainly with vulnerable, disadvantaged and orphaned children in extreme poverty, aged 4-18, often on the edge of local society. Many of the children live in ‘shanty towns’ without one or both parents, and where family life may be severely disrupted due to the impact of persistent poverty, unemployment, chronic illness, AIDS, and stress in relationships or addiction. Our aim is to help the child to live successfully within a family in the local community through:

• meeting basic needs by ensuring that the child is supported with appropriate care, shelter and food

• enhancing personal well-being and health

• fostering the development of Christian faith and discipleship

• ensuring access to education and schooling

• providing opportunities to build positive social relationships

The work of CHI takes place primarily within our CarePoints, where the child is supported through regular attendance for about 8 -12 hours per week.

These are centres where children meet to receive personal care and educational support from trained local workers. The CarePoint programme provides the following types of support to the child:

• food and nutrition

• counselling and mentoring

• educational tuition and support in learning linked to the local school curriculum, including:

o basic skills of literacy, numeracy and communication

   o social and life skills

   o vocational skills

o the local school curriculum and homework

• participation in a Christian community and a structured discipleship programme

• access to medical care

• opportunity to make friends and socialise

• recreational activity, including sports, games, art, craft, music, dance and drama

CHI in the UK

At present the UK Trustees raise approximately £20,000 per annum. Much more is donated in kind, for example the UK Trustees and local volunteers work ‘pro bono’ without payment or expenses on behalf of the organisation. Internationally, CHI has an annual budget of approximately two million US dollars, about 250 staff and volunteers, and supports almost 2000 children. CHI international has ambitious plans to increase the number of children supported to 6000 over the next five years. Currently, Christ’s Hope International works in seven countries in Africa. The UK supports work in these countries through the International Office of CHI. In addition, the UK team has a strong relationship with Namibia and is considering working with Uganda as another strategic partner. The UK team also works closely with six other developed nations to support the work in Africa, including the United States, Germany and the Netherlands.

One of the major fundraising strategies of Christ’s Hope International is through Child Sponsorship Program. A part-time volunteer Child Sponsorship Coordinator for the UK is in post. The UK Director will be responsible for the management of this person and is expected to work closely with volunteers and the UK Trustees.

Funding for the post has been secured for at least two years. The UK Trustees anticipate that fund development during this period will produce enough income to maintain the post and appoint additional staff for the long term.
