Job title: Chief Executive (CE)
Reporting to: Board of Trustees, via Co-Chairs, Alison Bryan & Martin Quicke
Location: Flexible, with a preference for at least 50% in the ST office
Normal working hours: 28-35 hours per week
Term of employment: Permanent (following probation period)
Job purpose:
Working closely with the Co-Chairs of the Board of Trustees, to provide strategic and operational leadership to The Stewards’ Trust (ST) and its staff, volunteers and stakeholders in setting, reviewing and implementing the Vision, Mission and Strategy of the ST.
Focus and context:
ST sees itself as a family whose core purpose is to provide opportunities for Christian discipleship via a range of Christian teaching events (‘events’) for different ages, mentoring and, through our Youth Team, encouraging and supporting young people in their faith.
ST is constituted as a company limited by guarantee and is a registered charity governed by a Board of Trustees (currently eight) co-chaired by Alison Bryan and Martin Quicke. It is funded largely through donations (individual and from grant-making trusts) and seeks to run its events to break even or generate a small surplus as a contribution towards the costs of employing the staff team who play a major role in organising them. We have recently established a Transformational Bursary Fund to enable us to widen access to the Youth Events.
ST events are for all ages but naturally fall into three categories: ‘Youth’, ‘Family/All Age’ and ‘Adults’ whose duration can be a single day, a weekend/long weekend, or a week.
ST has a paid executive team who are responsible to and managed by the Chief Executive.
A message from the Co-Chairs, Martin Quicke and Alison Bryan:
“As CE of a Christian charity whose primary aim is life-long discipleship, delivered through the strength and quality of lived-out, close and personal relationships, your own expression of character and faith in this position is a key component in discharging the role. Modelling the fundamental faith-based values and aims of The Stewards’ Trust is integral to this position. In this context, being the CE carries an ambassadorial tone, for both Jesus Christ and the ST itself, through every area that it encompasses. Mature and firmly established Christian character - with the capacity for joy, experimentation, and expectation for hosting God’s perpetual creational purpose is fundamental - and summarizes what we are looking for in seeking to fill this position.”
Requirements & personal qualities:
- A passion for the work of the Stewards’ Trust
- Proven organisational, administration, leadership and financial skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Experience of developing effective relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
- A positive personality and an ability to take initiative.
Key responsibilities:
There are seven broad areas of responsibility:
- Vision, Mission and Strategy
- Team leadership, management and mentoring
- Recruitment and training
- Finance and fundraising
- Communication and marketing
- The ‘volunteer base’
- Governance and regulatory.
However, the role is one that requires the Chief Executive to be flexible, getting ‘stuck in’ with front-line work, when required, in many and varied ways!
The Chief Executive will have regular one-to one meetings with the Co-Chairs and will be invited to attend meetings of the Board of Trustees.
